MD4 Generator: Creating MD4 Hashes

MD4 (Message Digest Algorithm 4) is a cryptographic hash function designed by Ronald Rivest in 1990. It produces a 128-bit hash value, usually displayed as a 32-character hexadecimal string. MD4 was a significant advancement over MD2 in terms of speed, but it was later found to be insecure and was quickly replaced by MD5 and other algorithms.

How MD4 Works

MD4 processes input in 512-bit blocks and uses a series of bitwise operations, modular additions, and rotations. It is designed for 32-bit processors and is much faster than MD2. However, its speed comes at the cost of security.

Security Weaknesses of MD4

MD4 is considered cryptographically broken:

  • Collision attacks: Practical collisions were demonstrated as early as 1995. It is now trivial to find two different inputs with the same MD4 hash.
  • Preimage attacks: While less practical than collisions, theoretical weaknesses exist.
  • Short hash: 128 bits is insufficient for modern security requirements.

Because of these weaknesses, MD4 should never be used for digital signatures, certificates, or password hashing.

Historical Significance

MD4 was influential in the development of later hash functions. MD5 was designed as a strengthened version of MD4, and many of MD4's design principles influenced SHA-1. However, MD4 itself was retired from security use long ago.

Where MD4 Is Still Found

MD4 is largely obsolete, but it may appear in:

  • Legacy systems that have not been updated.
  • Some old protocols that used MD4 for message authentication.
  • Educational contexts for studying hash function design.

It is not recommended for any new application.

MD4 vs. MD5

MD5 is essentially a strengthened MD4. It is slightly slower but much more resistant to attacks. Both produce 128-bit hashes, but MD5 is preferred over MD4 in every scenario where either might be considered. Even MD5, however, is now considered weak for security purposes.

Conclusion

MD4 is a fast but insecure hash function. It was an important step in the evolution of cryptographic hashes, but it has been thoroughly broken and should not be used for any security-related purpose. It remains available in hash generator tools for legacy compatibility and study.
